This set is charming. Original order. Rusty tin case. Old disc-shape check weights for full sovereign (8 grams) and half sovereign (4 grams). Missing the original weights for which the locations were provided at lower right of case. Case measures approximately 11cm long.
Lovely antique rustic condition.
One can imagine a merchant in the mid 19th century accepting payment for goods in sovereigns, and prior to finalising the transaction just doing a quick check on the weight in case they were not gold. One holds a piece of fabric tied to the loop at the top of the scales between forefinger and thumb, allowing the scales to be freely suspended as shown, then placing the check weight in one (brass) pan, and the customer's coin in the other, for verification of authenticity..
