What a find. This is a rare collectable spoon, the like of which I have seen only in the Powerhouse Museum (Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences).
Made in sterling silver and set with a Trigonia shell bowl and map of Tasmania finial in the workshops of noted Tasmanian makers W. Golding and Son, Australia's oldest jewellery firm. (Located at Golding's Corner Hobart since 1875)
William Golding and Son were among the makers of spoons with map-of-Tasmania finials and Trigonia shells as bowls supported by silver mounts that joined the shell to a twisted stem. Inscribed 'Tasmania' on the finial and made about 1910, the spoon is a good example. (See: K. Cavill, 'Commemorative and souvenir spoons of Australian interest, 1894-1994', Australiana, 1994 (4), pp 95-106.)
For further research theres excellent reading at http://www.goldingandson.com.au/history
The back of the Tasmania finial reads STERLING SILVER GOLDING.
It measures approxximately 12cm long and the bowl approximately 40 mm wide.
BUT WAIT...THERE'S MORE!!!!! We also have a miniature version of this wonderful historic Tasmanian spoon being sold separately.
